Living on acreage

We love living on acreage and we're still under a 60 minute drive from the Brisbane GPO.

The boys have a massive yard to play in. We have acres of land that our horses roam. We have fresh country air and expansive views. And the boys have their own quad bike to ride around.

It's a little bit of work but I don't treat the entire place like a suburban back yard. I don't mow it all (eek), only our designated yard areas.

Slowly we are making improvements to the property. Water storage is really important so we installed an additional water tank and a large dam to catch the water run off.

Making improvements (but not overcapitalising) is part of growing our wealth.

Next plan is to plant bamboo screens around the property to:

- provide wind breaks

- provide privacy from neighbours

- provide protection from fast flowing flood waters that affect the property periodically.

We will be using Bambusa Oldhamii. It can grow 18 to 25 metres high. It's native to Southern China and is one of the straightest growing bamboo species. Not one for the modern suburban postage stamp block ;)

I first learnt about Oldhamii from Geoff Lawton, a great permaculture expert:

Once we locate the bamboo and plant it we'll provide updates on its growth :)
